About

The Piedmont Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons d/lo/a The Piedmont Proctologic Society was first organized June 3, 1949, by Drs. Ross Deeds and J. Milton Stockman while in attendance at the 50th annual meeting of the American Proctologic Society at the Deschler Wallach Hotel in Columbus, Ohio.

Other members present at that breakfast meeting were Drs. Farrar Parker, William Folk, Clough Wallace, Glenn Perry, W. W. Poison, Thomas Brockman, Isaac Harris, Charles Drummond and Charles Howard.

The first official meeting was held July 30, 1949 in Asheville, NC. Out of 23 doctors invited, 12 were present. The society adopted the name “The Piedmont Proctologic Society.” A constitution and by-laws were adopted requiring membership in The American Proctologic Society before becoming a member of The Piedmont Proctologic Society. It was also established that two meetings be held each year.

In the beginning, the geographic area for The Piedmont Proctologic Society included North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and eastern Tennessee. At one point the Florida Proctologic Society wanted to merge with The Piedmont Society and adopt the name, “Piedmont-Florida Proctologic Society.” Because of this incident, Dr. Stockman recommended that the geographic area be extended to include the southeastern states so that those within the expanded area would be eligible for membership and the Society (The Piedmont Proctologic Society) would retain its own individual identity. Dr. Stockman also suggested that those outside of the expanded area would be eligible for honorary membership and that all guest speakers outside of the geographic area would automatically be made honorary members.

In 1976, the name of our Society was changed from “THE PIEDMONT PROCTOLOGIC SOCIETY” to “THE PIEDMONT SOCIETY OF COLON AND RECTAL SURGEONS d/bla THE PIEDMONT PROCTOLOGIC SOCIETY”

One of the main purposes of our Society over the years has been to encourage top residents and young surgeons to consider our specialty. In the years since its organization in 1949, a great deal has been accomplished; partly because our members feel that each of us should, to paraphrase Kahlil Gibran, “Ask not what your SOCIETY can do for you, ask what YOU can do for your Society.”

Since the origin of The Piedmont Proctologic Society, Dr. Stockman, along with all the members have always insisted that the society should maintain the format which has made this society what it is today.

Hopefully this brief history will help familiarize the members with the origin of this Society and help us to realize that it is an honor and privilege to be a member of The Piedmont Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

MEMBERSHIP ROSTER

FAMILY ORIENTED
We encourage our members and invited guests to bring their children, parents, friends, and guests.

HOSPITALITY
We have always maintained Hospitality rooms as a place to gather and socialize. Having an informal place to gather is the “glue” that keeps our members together.

MOST IMPORTANT ALSO IS THE INFORMALITY OF OUR SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS
There was a question about formal papers and publications; but, due to Dr. Stockman’s insistence, it was decided that there was no need to change our policy and that The Piedmont Proctologic Society should retain its own individuality and identity without any affiliation with any publisher or other societies.
